EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Thorn Hill Education Center was named Family Literacy Champion by First Lady Britainy Beshear during National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week in Frankfort — enrollment in adult education programs increased 19% as measurable skills improved from 55.89% to 63.75%. The State Journal
- ➤ Kentucky State University hosted the 5th International Pawpaw Conference at its Harold R. Benson Research and Demonstration Farm in Frankfort from Sept. 9-11 where over 200 researchers, growers and producers gathered from North America, Europe and Asia. At a Sept. 10 press conference, Dr. Siddhartha Dasgupta announced two new pawpaw cultivars and local collaborators shared product updates — underscoring the event’s focus on research and economic opportunity. - ➤ Kentucky State University supporters gathered Tuesday at Coleman Crest Farm for the inaugural Sam and Cleo Coleman Fundraiser that raised $30,000 for scholarships—cohosted by Jim Coleman in honor of his parents. The event featured speeches from students, KSU officials, and Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman and drew community members from Frankfort and Lexington. The State Journal

- ➤ According to the U.S. Drought Monitor report released Thursday, prolonged hot and dry weather deepened Kentucky’s drought with only 13.28% of the state drought-free. Nearly 20% of the state now experiences serious drought and parts of far southwestern counties have reached extreme drought—forecasters warn that light rain and warm temperatures could worsen conditions. - ➤ Kentucky’s jobless rate fell to 4.2 percent in August as many unemployed workers left the labor force instead of finding new jobs. Nonfarm employment increased with gains in leisure and hospitality—showing a mixed picture for the state’s workforce. Kentucky Today
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Kentucky Supreme Court ruled that Lexington’s no-knock warrant ban is unconstitutional because it conflicts with state law and Senate Bill 4 which allows no-knock warrants when clear evidence exists—ending a challenge by the local police union. The decision reverses an earlier ruling and shows that state law overrides local ordinances. WTVQ
- ➤ Residents will attend virtual foster care forums on Sept. 25, 29, Oct. 3 and 8 to discuss how to improve support and prevent harm to children—each session requires advance registration. The sessions will run from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. ET and will help guide annual recommendations to state officials. Kentucky Today
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Health officials warned residents after central hospitals recorded 67 suspected nonfatal overdose visits since September 11, triggering a public alert today — they urged calling 911 immediately and said naloxone is available at local health departments. WKYT

- ➤ Frankfort’s boys soccer team won a close 1-0 game against Franklin County at Capitol View Park Tuesday as the Panthers played with two red cards in the second half—testing their strength in a tough match. Josiah Conner scored the only goal with 14:20 left—while both teams will play further matches on Saturday. The State Journal
