COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Capital City Activity Center/Meals on Wheels Greater Frankfort celebrated its 60th anniversary during National Senior Center Month, offering seniors vital classes and services to boost health, money skills, and community ties—Marchele Jenkins said the center keeps providing fun workshops and meals to help older adults live on their own.  The State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Frankfort Latino Fest will take place at Lakeview Park from noon to 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28 — the event will feature cultural presentations, performances and family activities that celebrate Latino heritage and is organized by One of US in partnership with Monte Carlo Venues.  The State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 100 Second Street School students will visit the High Street and North Lexington Family YMCAs next week to learn water safety skills—an effort arranged by Swim With Purpose and the YMCA. Families may also join free swim lessons during Frankfort Independent Schools’ fall break from Oct. 6 to 10, with provided transportation, lunch, and swimsuits.  The State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Marianne Proctor introduced a bill on Thursday to define and criminalize grooming of minors in Kentucky— the draft sets penalties that range from Class A misdemeanors to Class D felonies and has received bipartisan support on the Interim Joint Committee on Judiciary. Prosecutors say the law will help stop predatory behavior before it escalates into sexual assault.  LINK nky
  • State Representative Steve Doan proposed a measure today that will restrict ultra-processed foods containing dyes, preservatives, and additives from school cafeterias, vending machines, and student stores in Kentucky and will cap fast food to one day per week if passed—districts must comply by the 2027 to 2028 school year.  WTVQ
  • Kentucky's highest court ruled on Thursday that Lexington's ban on no-knock warrants conflicted with a state law that permits such warrants under strict conditions, and Louisville officials said their local ban remains in effect—officers there will continue following the ordinance.  Kentucky Today
  • State House Representative Richard White and House Local Government Committee Chair Patrick Flannery will reintroduce Troy’s Law after a Tuesday hearing in Frankfort—aiming to let tow trucks use blue lights for extra safety. Supporters say the measure comes nearly a year after Troy Caldwell died on the job and could help slow drivers in roadside situations.  LEX 18
  • A former Pic-Pac on West Second Street was knocked down to make space for Frankfort Fire Station 1 — the new station will be built soon.  The State Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Officials from the Kentucky Drug Overdose Alert System warned of a spike in suspected drug overdoses across central Kentucky since September 11 — 67 visits to emergency departments have been linked to suspected overdoses — and urged residents to carry naloxone and avoid using drugs alone.  WTVQ

  • Frankfort's boys golf team won the Hilen Cup after senior Carter Denton earned his third straight individual title with a two-shot win on Tuesday — his improved second round lifted him from a third-place start on Monday.  The State Journal
