- ➤ Frankfort crowned its homecoming queen Boswell and king Bebe on Monday, September 22nd—an event that celebrated local tradition and school pride. The State Journal
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ At the Bourbon County Band Competition held on Saturday, September 20, the Laker Band won awards for Best Visual, Best Music, and Best Effect—each honor was given to a group from Russell County. The win shows how local talent performed strongly in the competition. 92.7 The Wave
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Over 100 Frankfort Independent students visited the Lexington YMCA on Monday for free swim lessons that taught water safety and basic swimming skills, and they received lunch, swimsuits if needed, and vouchers for five more lesson days — arranged through a partnership with Swim with Purpose. - ➤ Former Attorney General Daniel Cameron has announced his bid to fill Mitch McConnell’s Senate seat after the senator said he would not run in 2026—Cameron said he will focus on eliminating DEI, supporting Kentucky farmers, and boosting nuclear energy. He also recalled the tragic killing of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk as he discussed the risks that come with public service. LEX 18
- ➤ Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman and the Kentucky State Police broke ground last Friday in Frankfort on a new $2.7 million Drivers’ Skills Pad where troopers and cadets will learn safe, advanced driving techniques — the facility will allow year-round training and is set to be finished by June. - ➤ The Kentucky Senate race became more competitive after former Secret Service agent Logan Forsythe and ex-CIA officer Joel Willett announced their campaigns last week, joining State Rep. Pamela Stevenson. Forsythe said his run is motivated by cuts to Medicaid & food benefits, while Willett aims to fight for working families. LEX 18
- ➤ A letter to the editor said that many Frankfort government offices have outdated interiors and systems—while the state Capitol remains well maintained. The letter urged officials to invest in modern refurbishments so that public buildings stay safe and dignified. The State Journal
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ FSIS has issued a public health alert for Trader Joe’s Turkey Gobbler Wrap because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The 10-oz product, produced on Sept 10 with a best-by date of Sept 16—shipped to Trader Joe’s including Frankfort stores—is no longer sold and should be discarded if found. Kentucky Today
- ➤ Health officials issued an overdose alert in 17 counties after hospitals reported 67 suspected nonfatal overdose visits since Sept. 11th—residents are advised to keep naloxone nearby and avoid using drugs alone. The State Journal
- ➤ The 16th annual Tee It Up with C.O.C.O. nine-hole ladies charity golf scramble was held Sept. 16 at Frankfort Country Club—individual and team winners were recognized, including Pam Beebe for closest to the pin on hole 2. The event supported ovarian cancer research and education for 16 years and raised $41,000 last year, with over $364,000 donated in 15 years. The State Journal

- ➤ Kentucky football will face South Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida every season under the SEC nine-game schedule starting in 2026—additional games will come from a rotating pool of six teams. WTVQ
- ➤ Western Hills football team picked up its first win of the season Friday by beating Dayton 35-30 at WHHS; interim coach Matthew Dawahare changed the offense after meeting with coach Dudley Hilton. Strong rushing by Cameron Flynn and J.T. Jackson powered the win, and the team will prepare for district play on Friday. The State Journal
