CULTURE NEWS

  • South Arts announced that applications are open until November 19 for two grant opportunities for literary and visual artists in Kentucky and eight other states. The Southern Prize & State Fellowships program awards 18 artists $5,000 each while the Literary Arts Project Grant offers up to $5,000 for project work.  Kentucky Today
  • Today, Lexington Children’s Theatre performs Stuart Little at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Somerset hosts the free Moonlight Festival at Fountain Square starting at 11 a.m., and the Kentucky Historical Society leads a free Civil War tour at Fort Hill from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.—with a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. also offered for the play.  WKYT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new household survey found that nearly five in six Kentucky parents want afterschool programs for their children but often cannot enroll them due to high costs or limited availability — with only 56,940 enrolled out of 346,276 needed. Most parents support public funding to boost program access and maintain safety and skill development.  Kentucky Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Frankfort will bring back curbside recycling on an every-other-week schedule starting Oct. 27 after a yearlong pause caused by a truck malfunction and repairs at the Rouse Avenue recycling center—residents on schedule A will have pickup on Tuesday through Friday while those on schedule B will begin on Nov. 3.  The State Journal

FINANCE NEWS

  • A Frankfort man named Arnold Suter won $50,000 on a Kentucky Lottery scratch-off ticket while picking up dinner at Kroger on US Highway 127 — he then called his wife and said the winnings will help pay bills and support their grandchildren.  WKYT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City leaders in Frankfort planned an urban renewal of the old Craw neighborhood — a move intended to free up space for downtown expansion — which led to the demolition of many homes and the relocation of hundreds of families. The long project, started in the mid-1950s, later transformed the area into a civic plaza, parking garage and office complex.  The State Journal
  • Kentucky placed eighth in Site Selection magazine’s Global Groundwork Index that uses data on capital investments, job announcements, and funds for infrastructure. Gov. Beshear said the state is ready to attract more businesses—he also announced a new plan to boost jobs, talent, and tourism.  Kentucky Today
  • Frankfort residents on schedule A will have multipurpose trucks pick up both recycling and trash starting Monday Oct.27, as the City’s Solid Waste department released an updated collection schedule—details of which will be sent by mail and posted on the FrankWaste app. The revised plan follows repairs to the recycling center and the purchase of a new truck.  The State Journal

  • Freshman Sophie Dufour (Franklin County) earned her fifth Patriot League Rookie of the Week award after tallying 31 kills and 23 digs to help American University volleyball win two matches last weekend. She showed strong play against Lafayette and Holy Cross and continues to boost her team's performance.  The State Journal
