COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Capital City Activity Center will host a full week of programs from October 20 to 24—featuring billiards, bingo, exercise sessions with Karen, Tai Chi for Arthritis, chair volleyball, knitting, prayer, and community club meetings. Programs also include a breast cancer awareness session, Free Food Friday, and other events for local residents to join and enjoy.  The State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kentuckians see Woodford and Franklin counties as the Birthplace of Bourbon because early makers like James Crow and Col. E.H. Taylor transformed whiskey with improved techniques—Josephine L. Roche later set legal standards that preserved its unique legacy.  The State Journal
  • Van The Band from Ireland will honor Van Morrison with a tribute performance at the Grand Theatre on November 7 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are limited and Expree Credit Union is sponsoring the event in the restored 428-seat venue.  The State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Paul Sawyier Public Library will offer a busy week of events for all ages starting Monday, including pumpkin painting sessions for different grade levels, glow-in-the-dark science experiments, community talks on race, and book groups such as a reading with Silas House. Many sessions run through Saturday and all pumpkins will be displayed at Downtown Frankfort Inc. Trick-Or-Treat on Oct. 25 — registration is only needed for select events.  The State Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Commonwealth Fund study reported that Kentucky ranked third worst in Medicare performance due to poor access, high preventable hospitalizations, and rising loneliness among seniors. The report compared a rate of 31.5 preventable hospitalizations per 1,000 beneficiaries in Kentucky to 26.4 nationally (using 2023 and 2024 data) to show the ongoing challenges in the state.  LINK nky
  • Kentucky health officials warned that cooler weather will bring more cases of illnesses such as COVID-19, flu, and RSV. They said pregnant women should get their vaccines during doctor visits—ACOG recommends this to help keep both mom and baby safe.  Kentucky Today

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kentucky lost their ninth SEC game 16—13 in overtime to Texas at Kroger Field on Saturday night—quarterback Cutter Boley completed 31 of 39 passes. The Wildcats missed key scoring chances and will host Tennessee next week at 7:45.  WTVQ
