COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Melissa Wallace and Stephanie Theakston have launched the 'It's Time' initiative for Domestic Violence Awareness Month—aiming to raise awareness and support for abuse prevention in the community.  WKYT
  • Bridging the Gap is hosting a Turkey Extravaganza—designed for flood survivors and lower-income families—at Monte Carlo Venue, 207 Eastwood Shopping Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 15. The event will give away 150 turkeys and hams and include games, activities with Yes Art, food from Penn Station, and nonprofit stations—featuring voter registration and voting restoration—that provide vital support.  The State Journal
  • The Central Kentucky Homemakers Quilt Guild is seeking donations for 130 stockings that will go to Meals on Wheels recipients at Capital City Activity Center in Frankfort. Donations are accepted from November 3 to 24 at local sites, and volunteers will help sort items on December 1 from 3-7 p.m. and stuff the stockings on December 2 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. + the drive aims to provide seniors with useful items for their homes.  The State Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Kentucky State Police honored four civilians — Jimmy and Jessica Alexander, their daughter Taylor Hall and airport officer Adam Arnold — who rushed to aid Trooper Jude Remilien when he was shot during a July 13 traffic stop near Blue Grass Airport, and Remilien later was seen walking on his own power.  WKYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sheri Bell is seeking artisan vendors for Candlelight Weekend at First Presbyterian Church at 416 West Main St. from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on November 13th and 14th + interested artists should contact her by email.  The State Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Recent rain has eased drought conditions in much of Kentucky as 86.57 percent of the state now shows no drought—up from 65.77 percent last week—and only 10.67 percent remains abnormally dry, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor report issued Thursday. The report also noted that moderate drought is now limited to 2.76 percent in far Western counties with no area in severe drought.  Kentucky Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Due to construction near the Capitol and Governor’s Mansion, there will be no trick-or-treating in the area this Halloween—Gov. Andy Beshear said he hopes a safe solution will let the community celebrate next year.  The State Journal
  • Kentucky Utilities filed a request with the Public Service Commission proposing a rate increase that, if passed, will raise electric bills by about 40% compared to 2015 and increase meter fees for residential and small commercial users. The proposal also cuts solar net metering credits, and a public meeting will be held on Nov 3 at PSC Offices—customers can file comments there.  The State Journal
  • Chief Justice Debra Hembree Lambert urged Kentucky attorneys to serve as guardians ad litem to help protect vulnerable children in dependency and abuse cases, noting the need is especially high in rural areas. The Administrative Office of the Courts will hold legal training sessions in November in Covington, Lexington, and Paducah—registration is required to participate.  LINK nky
  • Gov. Andy Beshear announced more than $922,000 from the USDA Forest Service for four Kentucky communities to develop wildfire protection plans during the fall wildfire season; local officials received funding —$250,000 to Knox, $237,000 to Lewis, $235,000 to Powell and $200,000 to Gateway—while state fire officials warned that outdoor burning restrictions from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. from October 1 to December 15 could be necessary as dry conditions and heavy vegetation raise wildfire risks.  Kentucky Today
