COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More Than A Bakery in Versailles strengthened its commitment to second chance hiring—partnering with DV8 Kitchen to enhance its fair chance employment program for those with criminal records or in recovery. The renewed effort has already supported employees like Kenneth Tuttle—who has seen positive change after his long wait for a fresh start.  LEX 18

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ayla Tolentino, vice president of Bondurant Middle School's FFA chapter, was recognized by the Kentucky State Senate — Sen. Gex Williams commended her for earning a top 10 national ranking as a finalist in the Agriscience Fair. The ceremony at the Kentucky Capitol marked the first time a Bondurant student reached this level of achievement.  The State Journal
  • On Monday, Midway University received a $335,660 multi-year grant from KAHP to fund new equipment for its nursing skills and simulation labs. The grant will add high-fidelity patient simulators—advanced monitoring systems and IV training modules to improve hands-on training for Kentucky nursing students.  Kentucky Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Frankfort is relaunching its curbside recycling service this week and officials say all recyclables must be clean, dry and loose—items like No. 1 and No. 2 plastics, glass, metal and paper are accepted while plastic bags, styrofoam and similar materials are not. The program picks up recycling every other week based on neighborhood schedules.  The State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Next summer, the Capital Avenue Bridge will close on four weekends—each closure running from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday—to allow preservation work that repairs the deck, joints, and handrails. Frankfort Project Manager Chuck Knowles said the state has opened bids and will likely pick Delong Concrete LLC for $925,000, with the project expected to finish by Nov. 1, 2026.  The State Journal
  • On Friday, politicians and youth gathered at the Livestock Pavilion in Lakeview Park for the Kentucky Legislator Showmanship Showdown where Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell declared October as Kentucky Pork Month—an event that highlighted the state's pork industry and saw young handlers guiding pigs in a friendly competition. The contest also helped promote youth involvement in agriculture for future industry growth.  The State Journal
  • Kentucky State Police offered Halloween safety advice for trick-or-treaters, parents, drivers and homeowners this Friday evening—urging drivers to slow down and children to wear bright, light-colored costumes while using flashlights. Homeowners are advised to turn on porch lights and remove tripping hazards—steps that aim to make Halloween safer for everyone.  Kentucky Today

HEALTH NEWS

  • LSI, Inc. is recalling roughly 2,277,540 pounds of Golden Island pork jerky that may contain metal pieces—traced to issues with its conveyor belt—after consumers reported finding metal in the product. The item, shipped to Costco and Sam’s Club, has best-by dates from October 23 to September 23 and should not be eaten.  Kentucky Today
  • Public health officials warn that bats are more active in the fall (bats mate and then hibernate) and may be found around homes. They urge residents not to touch bats and to call local health departments if pets are exposed (bats might carry rabies).  Kentucky Today
