CULTURE NEWS

  • An opening reception for Fran Redmon Pastel Paintings is set for Sunday, Nov. 9 between noon and 1:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church's Wesley Center Gallery at 211 Washington St.—the exhibit featuring pastel scenes of Kentucky and travel views will be available for viewing until Dec. 31.  The State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Westridge Elementary, librarian Brittany Nagler held a photography contest where 15 students sent in their photos for a state competition and two finalists were selected. Completely Kentucky then turned four student images—by Hadley G., Finnley R., Ashtyn D. and Hannah M.—into postcards to raise funds for Simon House, which helps homeless families.  The State Journal
  • Kentucky education agencies and partners launched GO!vember to help students and families explore college, career and technical training options via online resources—social media posts will guide participants through the month while directing them to Futuriti.org for planning tools.  Kentucky Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Martha Layne Collins, Kentucky’s first and only elected female governor, died on Saturday at age 88. She led the state’s economic growth through projects like the Toyota plant and education reforms, and current officials have praised her lasting impact.  The State Journal

  • Frankfort's John J. Crittenden House, the city's second-oldest home built around 1800 and located at 401 W. Main St., will be auctioned at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22 — once owned by statesman John J. Crittenden — in an upcoming sale.  The State Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cooper runner Paul Van Laningham won his second straight 3A state cross country title on Saturday at the Kentucky Horse Park — he finished in 15:01 and 13 seconds ahead of Lafayette's Xavier Richardson.  LINK nky
