The Frank W. Sower Community Trust donated money to the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry on November 3 to aid Franklin County residents amid worries over SNAP cuts from a possible government shutdown.

John Sower made the gift on behalf of his family—honoring his father, Frank W. Sower—and the donation provided crucial help to local food assistance efforts.

Kentucky expanded SNAP work reporting rules so most adults ages 18–64 must prove 80 hours of work monthly, even if they were once exempt.

The new requirements took effect on Nov. 1 and may cut benefits for up to 114,000 recipients—forcing many to rely on food pantries amid a government shutdown that worsens food insecurity.

Franklin County Fiscal Court approved an MOU with Josephine Sculpture Park at 3355 Lawrenceburg Road to add the park’s 40 acres to its public park system, and the park will receive $50,000 per year — funds that support arts and nature offerings without daily oversight.

Founder Melanie VanHouten said the park, which charges no admission, gives local residents a new place to enjoy art and the outdoors.

The U.S. Small Business Administration reminded Kentucky small businesses and private nonprofits to apply for low interest federal disaster loans by Dec.

1 to cover losses from rain, flash floods, and high winds that hit from July 30 to Aug.2, 2024. The loans are available in Breckinridge, Grayson, Hancock, Hardin, Meade and Ohio counties — they offer up to $2 million for working capital needs with a 12-month grace period before payments start.
