ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • After the recent UPS plane crash in Louisville, many Kentuckians recalled the 2006 Comair Flight 5191 crash at Blue Grass Airport. The 2006 crash (which killed 49 people) led to changes in airport safety procedures that continue to shape air travel.  WTVQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kentucky Department of Agriculture announced that students in grades K-12 can enter its annual Poster and Essay Contest themed Bluegrass Roots, Agriculture Strong—entries must include the theme and be postmarked by March 20. Winners will be chosen by April 17 and receive a $100 award along with recognition at next year’s awards ceremony.  Kentucky Today

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Frankfort EMS colleagues are planning a state memorial to honor paramedic John Mackey, who died in 2015 during a call, as the Kentucky EMS Memorial Foundation seeks state funding with plans and a site secured—official estimates put the cost at about $500,000.  WKYT
  • Kentucky Fish and Wildlife officials have updated hunting rules that ban the use of drones for herding, harassing or fishing (to help balance hunter opportunity with wildlife management). Violators may face fines up to $500, equipment seizure and loss of hunting privileges (enforced via public tips).  LEX 18
  • Former Governor Martha Layne Collins died at 88 and is known for leading education reform and bringing Toyota to Kentucky. Funeral services will follow her lying in state at the Old State Capitol in Frankfort on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.—a tribute to her lasting impact.  WTVQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • The No. 24 Kentucky women's basketball team beat Monmouth 104-46 on Thursday as Lexi Blue scored 18 points from behind the arc and teammates Teonni Key, Amelia Hassett, and Asia Boone each reached double figures—helping the Wildcats build an early twenty-point lead and record seven steals and eight blocks. They will travel to Buffalo on Sunday at 2 p.m. for their first road test.  WTVQ
