CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Candlelight Weekend, presented by Commonwealth Credit Union, began on Thursday and brings holiday cheer to downtown Frankfort with tree lighting, festive displays & family activities. Visitors enjoy seasonal performances and special attractions as part of the official kick-off to the holiday shopping season. The State Journal
- ➤ Andrew Moore and his Eastern Kentucky band Hooch won awards for Band of the Year Multi-Genre, Blues Song of the Year, and Album of the Year and made the initial ballot for the Grammy Awards — their biggest achievement, according to Moore. They will represent their hometown by playing at London’s annual New Year’s Eve Ball Drop event soon. WKYT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Funeral arrangements including a public viewing have been finalized to honor former Gov. Martha Layne Collins, who died Nov. 1 at 88, as she will lie in state on Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. in the Rotunda of the Old State Capitol on Broadway in Frankfort. Her memorial service is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.—KET will broadcast the service live. Kentucky Today
- ➤ Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear announced that the state health cabinet is finalizing regulations to ban 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), a potent derivative of kratom now classified as a Schedule I drug; law enforcement will remove these products from stores when the rule takes effect. LINK nky
- ➤ The Kentucky modern gun deer hunting season begins today and runs until Nov. 23—officials report that hunters have new tools like the Deer & Elk App available and note that about 150,000 deer were harvested last year. Hunters must follow all license and reporting rules during this season. WKYT
- ➤ Gov. Andy Beshear announced his administration is moving to classify 7-hydroxymitragynine as a Schedule I narcotic to curb dangerous drug sales in Kentucky. The updated regulation will let law enforcement remove unsafe products (including concentrated forms sold in shots, powders, or capsules) from stores statewide. Kentucky Today

- ➤ Western Hills football lost a Class 4A state playoff game 46—0 to Valley on Thursday; the loss came as key injuries and defensive mistakes weakened the young Wolverines. Coach Matt Dawahare said the team will work in the offseason to prepare for next season. The State Journal
