CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Western Hills art teacher Jan Kirstein had two abstract pieces shown at the Louvre in Paris last month—selected by ARTBOXY—which used bright colors and movement to tell a story about people losing their homes. She said the curators’ praise surprised her and changed the way she feels about her work. The State Journal
- ➤ Frankfort native Eric Whisman—magistrate on the Franklin County Fiscal Court—held a workshop Sunday at North Benson Baptist Church to show the proper way to clean gravestones ahead of the church’s 200th anniversary. He explained that using water and a soft brush prevents damage while bleach can harm the stones. The State Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Researchers at the University of Kentucky Research and Education Center in Princeton finished a two-year study on using drones to spray fungicides for corn diseases and found that the method works well in small fields with obstacles + they will host a workshop in late February to share the results with farmers. - ➤ The Council on Postsecondary Education announced Friday that total degrees and credentials for 2024-25 increased 5% from last year and 15.1% since 2019-20 at public universities, community colleges and independent institutions. The board also approved new programs—a master’s in sports analytics at KSU and bachelor’s degrees in applied economics and artificial intelligence at UK—and a report recommending measures to improve KSU’s financial health. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Franklin County officials reported positive results from the NET Recovery Device treatment for 15 people, with Michelle Warfield saying she became clean after using it in August. At the county meeting, sheriff Dwayne Depp asked for approval of an MOU to assign School Resource Officers in county schools and council members approved other items — board appointments, tax details, and budget transfers. - ➤ Motorists will face nightly closures of the I-64 West off-ramp at Exit 53A from 6 p.m. to midnight beginning Monday, Nov. 17—until Friday, Nov. 21—as contract crews replace a cross drain; drivers should use caution when driving over the new structure. The State Journal
- ➤ Starting Nov. 17 until Nov. 21, KY 12 on Flat Creek Road between mile markers 11 and 8 (near Onans Bend and Polsgrove Roads) will be closed nightly from 6 p.m. to midnight so crews can replace cross drains and lay rock until asphalt is set; drivers must follow posted detour signs and be aware that work may be delayed by weather or other issues.
