  • Community groups in central Kentucky hosted Thanksgiving meals on November 26 that gave food and connected guests to help—Lexington Rescue Mission marked its 25th feast and the Jessamine County Homeless Coalition served over 1,000 people.  LEX 18

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Dec. 9, Kentucky State Poet Laureate Kathleen Driskell will read at First Presbyterian Church in Frankfort at 6:30 p.m.—she will join local and regional poets and enjoy a performance by the jazz duo Not Ready for Brubeks as part of Jerry Deaton’s When Poetry Meets Jazz series, with the event free to the public.  The State Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Thanksgiving meal prices for 10 will be 5% lower than last year as retailers locked in lower turkey rates amid fewer bird flu issues. Families will face higher costs for fresh produce and some side dishes because weather and supply problems have reduced available crops.  WKYT

  • The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has offered safety tips for drivers during the busy holiday season as 104 million people are expected to travel; officials advise winterizing vehicles, packing emergency supplies, and driving slowly on snowy roads—cabinet Secretary Jim Gray stressed the need for extra caution after dark.  LINK nky

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sophia Harris switched from birth control pills to an IUD to manage her hormone issues amid concerns over rising restrictions on reproductive rights, but she and other Kentuckians reported extreme pain during the procedure. Health care providers and Planned Parenthood now offer improved numbing treatments and sedation options to help ease discomfort.  The State Journal
  • T.J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow earned its fifth consecutive 'A' Hospital Safety Grade by The Leapfrog Group, joining only 2% of state hospitals that have achieved this standard — a sign of its focus on patient safety.
