COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Morning Pointe of Frankfort Assisted Living and The Lantern Alzheimer’s Memory Care enjoyed festive meals and a Thankful Tree activity this Thanksgiving season and now invite neighbors, families, and local organizations to join in the holiday celebrations—strengthening community bonds. Volunteers from choirs, youth groups, and service clubs will continue to brighten events throughout the season.  The State Journal
  • Trinity Global Methodist Church on Versailles Road will host a free children’s Christmas party at 11 a.m. on Saturday for kids ages 4 to 12 who will watch the movie The Star and enjoy lunch and activities with a parent. The church will also hold special worship services on Dec. 7, 14 and 21, a Christmas Eve service at 4 p.m., and a candlelight Holy hour with communion at 11 p.m. on Dec. 24.  The State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Grand Theatre in Frankfort will host a screening of the 23-minute short documentary A Gift for Ethan on Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, where filmmakers Will Chase and T.J. Burch—both local natives—will lead a Q&A with moderator Dan Atkins after doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are required for the free event, which follows the film with a reception and cash bar.  The State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Franklin County Schools Superintendent Mark Kopp explained that his team uses early morning road checks at 3:30 a.m.—dividing the county into three zones—to decide on today's possible school closures due to incoming winter weather. He said safety is the top priority when choosing to delay start times, hold early releases, or call a snow day so schools can meet calendar requirements.  WKYT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials warn that a mutated H3N2 flu strain is spreading in the U.S. and current vaccines may not fully protect against it—flu cases are rising in Kentucky and two seniors have died recently. They advise getting a flu shot early since it takes two weeks to build protection and urge everyone to follow basic steps to prevent the flu.  The State Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kentucky is expected to fire head football coach Mark Stoops today after 13 seasons with the Wildcats following back-to-back losing seasons and a 41-0 loss to rival Louisville. The coach finished with an 82-80 record and is reportedly owed $38 million under a contract that may allow the payout to be made over an extended period.  WTVQ
  • The University of Kentucky fired head football coach Mark Stoops after a 13-season tenure marked by back-to-back losing seasons and a 4-8 record, including a shutout loss to Louisville. Athletic director Mitch Barnhart said the school is now starting a national search for a new coach — Stoops said he would not leave on his own.  Louisville Public Media
  • Franklin County’s football team won 21-14 in its Class 4A semifinal against Tilghman at Benny Watkins Field — coach Eddie James motivated the players by displaying the state runner-up trophy. The Flyers will face Boyle County at 8 p.m. Friday at Kroger Field as they prepare to compete in the state title game.  The State Journal
