GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kentucky lawmakers passed a law that phases out the property tax on aging distilled spirits starting Jan. 1, 2026 and leading to full exemption by 2043 (with revenue protections for schools and fire districts) to support the bourbon industry.  WKYT
  • Kentucky’s income tax rate will drop to 3.5% on Jan. 1 and the state will lose about $718 million a year in revenue, which could affect funding for services (per a December report). Lawmakers will draft a two-year budget plan in Frankfort next year.  WKYT
  • Kentucky officials announced that the bourbon barrel tax will be phased out effective Jan. 1. Distilleries are bracing for new pricing structures as they adapt to the updated state regulation.  WKYT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Frankfort Christian Academy plays boys basketball this week: at Robertson County Saturday at 3:30 pm, at home Monday against Middlesboro, and at Bracken County Tuesday at 7:30 pm. Girls basketball, wrestling and Louisville basketball (at California Tuesday at 9 pm) complete a busy local schedule.  The State Journal
  • Franklin County’s boys basketball team lost 60-57 in overtime to Franklin-Simpson in the Capital City Classic Monday at FCHS. The Flyers rallied in the fourth quarter to force overtime and will face Henry County at home Jan. 5.  The State Journal
